EcoeFISHent: Transforming the Fishing Industry through Sustainability

In an era where sustainability is paramount, a new working group has emerged to help turn around the fishing industry. Co-funded by the European Commission under the Horizon 2020 program, the “EcoeFISHent” project promises to bring some interesting news to the Blue Economy.

EcoeFISHent is an “Innovation Action” with a distinct vision. It is primarily dedicated to activities focused on devising plans, designs, and innovations that can breathe new life into side-streams from the fisheries sector, i.e. byproducts and waste generated during various fishing processes.

The project focuses on streamlining complex and resource-intensive operational processes to enhance eco-friendliness and efficiency, thereby reducing waste, energy consumption, and carbon emissions. Its goal is to create a climate-neutral regional cluster that embraces the principles of the bio/blue/green/circular economy, emphasizing waste valorization, multi-sector supply, and sustainable practices, embracing diverse areas such as plastics and bioplastics, advanced logistics management via IoT and cloud technology, and active stakeholder involvement to preserve marine ecosystems and address challenges like ghost gears.

Undoubtedly of interest to the platform is the project’s collaborative approach involving multiple industries. The consortium is made up of 34 partners from different countries (Italy, Spain, France, Israel, Bulgaria, Norway, Kenya) involving a variety of stakeholders: universities, NGOs, consulting companies, leading companies in the field of counseling, circular economy,  green and blue technology, sustainable development, fishing industry representative, public and private bodies.

The project is coordinated by Filse – Finanziaria Ligure per lo sviluppo economico and features the participation of partners including ASdoMar, Coop, Portofino Marine Protected Area, University of Geona, WWF, and more.

It’s a testament to what can be achieved when research meets industry with a common goal of improving sustainability. We look forward to chatting with some of the partners on the platform in the coming weeks.
